Necessary I.T.E.M.S. grew from The Itinerant Theater Lab that was created by The Russian Arts Theater and Studio in 2013 to nurture the works of its current students and alumni in a supportive environment. The Russian Arts Theater & Studio was founded in 2004 by Artistic Director Aleksey Burago and actress Snezhana Chernova and has expanded and grown in the recent years under the management of actress and writer Di Zhu.
The members of The Itinerant Lab enjoyed working together and decided to continue exploring the potential of their collective, which in 2014 turned into Necessary I.T.E.M.S. Project - co-founded by Irina Abraham and Marina Volok. Marina is a Moscow Art Theater School graduate. She brought to our work the heritage of the Moscow Art Theatre.
Irina Abraham is the current artistic director. Her background has been in dance and theatre training is in the Russian traditions of Stanislavsky and Michael Chekhov. Building on psychological element of the work, Irina gives it a visual representation on stage through movement, rhythm, sound and overall visual composition.
Necessary I.T.E.M.S project is based upon such notions as Inner Truth, Experience, Movement and Style. We believe that an actor’s work starts from finding the inner truth of the character and ends with the most artistic expression of that truth. Thus, in our work we rely heavily on realism of the Moscow Art Theater acting technique (rooted in Stanislavsky and Michael Chekhov techniques), and then take it to another level exploring the outer expression of that truth using movement, dance and engaging all aspects of theatricality to create the appropriate artistic style of the production.
